When greeting a Thai, a Phalang (foreigner) should say: “Sawat-dii kha” if you are a woman; or “sawat dii khrap” if you are a man. This will go a long way with the locals feeling at ease with a foreigner.

1. A five night stay in Ko Samui (an island). This can be taken by a bus from Hua Hin and a ferry to the island. - Visas: Do I need one?
- THIS SHOULD NOT APPLY TO MEDICAL ELECTIVES SINCE THERE IS NO WORK, ONLY OBSERVATION.
Question: An NGO in Thailand has invited me to go there and work for them as a volunteer for 45 days during my school break. I will not earn any money in Thailand. I am a Belgian college student in Brussels. I understand that I do not need a visa, do I?
Answer: Although you will work as a volunteer, you do need a Non-Immigrant visa as well as the Work Permit. The NGO must be legally registered with the Thai authority, and that you need a recommendation letter from the NGO for your visa application and the Work Permit. - Visas: How do I get a Visa?
- If the dates you have given to us and intend to stay make a visit of less than 30 days this allows a "Tourist Visa Exemption" (see Visa link below).
Before you leave your home country, you can also apply for a 30-Day or 60-Day Tourist Visa.
If you are staying more than 30 days you MUST apply for a 60-Day Visa. If you leave the country, even overnight, you can extend a visa but you must read the regulations carefully.
If you were on an educational visit or a volunteer worker, you would need a different visa and a work permit, which takes a considerable time to process.
However, you are not matriculated on any educational course or working, only visiting and observing and the reason for your visit is tourism.
