Lares Valley Riding
2 days of downhill through the valley of Lares, famous for its outdoor hot springs and its traditional textiles. This tour is a fabulous opportunity to see real life in rural Peru. Suitable for all abilities, Lares is really a great place and if you’re not going there already (i.e. you’re not doing the additional medical rotation) this is the perfect opportunity to see what all the fuss is about.
Day 1
Cusco – Lares
Transfer 2 hours to the Lares Pass (4,470ms). The transfer takes us through stunning scenery and real life rural Peru. We can see alpacas and llamas grazing with their young shepherds close behind. On crossing the pass you have the choice of cycling down the 24km road and single track, or staying in your vehicle enjoying the view of the waterfalls and wildflowers and plants.
On arrival at Lares our crew will set up camp as we board our vehicle for a short transfer and a visit to the town of Choquecancha. This incredible stone built Inka town is home to the first rebellion meetings of the inkas. After an explanation about the town and its history we have a once in a lifetime opportunity to visit the home of a traditional Andean weaver for a demonstarion on weaving and how they make their natural dyes.
Night in the outdoor hot springs watching the stars.
Day 2
Lares – Cusco
Transfer of one hour to the Abra de Lares where we will walk (optional) 13km to the town of Totora. This is a pretty walk downhill through the alpacas and llamas, and the local people that still use this Inka Trail in their daily lives. We have fantastic opportunities to see the fascinating hummingbird as we wonder down through a colourful river canyon before arriving to the tiny village of Totora and lunch. After lunch you can either continue down to Calca in our vehicle or cycle another 15kms downhill to Calca and our transfer to Cusco. Arrival in Cusco 6pm (approx).
