The Medics Away House - Cusco, Peru

This is an old colonial house in the centre of Cusco, set on three floors, exclusively for medical students. Looked after by the Medics Away Rep and the live in resident of Juan Carlos, this house speaks for itself. With ten bedrooms, we can fit 20 students at once. Lares

Lares is a small town in the moutains, 3 hours bus ride outside of Cusco. This is one of the poorer regions of the Sacred Valley and the people are often in great need of medical attention. Conditions relating to poor nutrition and thyroid disease (i.e goitres) will present commonly. The clinic only has 3 doctors, a dentist, an obstetrician, a nurse and a technician. There are no laboratory facilities, so if patients require further investigation, they often are referred to Cusco or another district facility.

Quillabamba

The city of eternal summer. Quillabamba is a town set in the high jungle of Peru but the weather is hot all year round. Approximately 7 hours bus ride from Cusco, Quillabamba is a fantastic place to escape to in the latter weeks of your elective. The hospital is a fair size with 15 Doctors, 20 Nurses and a number of technicians who run their own laboratories. Aswell as Malaria, Quillabamba has recently had an outbreak of Yellow Fever and an increase in the incidence of Rabies, oddly enough as a result of people being bitten by bats.

Pongo de Mainique

The Pongo de Mainique is a 50-yard-wide, two-mile-long canyon through which flows the mighty Urubamba River. This is really a fantastic opportunity for Medics Away students to get deep into the jungle and go on a trip that few would have done before them. This is one of the more expensive trips, but for 8 days worth of adventure, you’re really going to get your moneys worth.

Manu

This expedition takes you into the heart of the rainforest at Manu with many bird and animal watching opportunities. All transefers are included. Manu is one of the ‘must do’s’ when you are in Peru. The Manu National Park is probably the most biologically diverse and protected parks on the planet, with 2 million hectares (4.5 million acres) of territory rich in flora and fauna species, and a variety of habitats including high Andes, cloud forests and lowland tropical rain forests.

For those Medics Away students who want a quick trip into the deep jungle, staying in a lodge in the Tambopata Reserve, with great opportunities for wildlife watching, walks canopy walking in the jungle and a visit to an ox bow lake to see giant otters, this trip is perfect for you.

Inca Jungle Trip Adventure

Presenting Medics Away’s latest addition the Peru experience, and is the included Discovery Trip to the Peru Elective. This trip gives you the opportunity to visit Machu Picchu and explore the Andes. Enjoying the freedom of traveling on mountain bikes through the cloud forest. Trek an Inca trail. Relax in thermal baths before visiting the archaeological site of Paltallacta. Mancora

Imagine a place where the sun shines all year round, the ocean is warm and the seafood is always fresh. The town is called Máncora and it is located in the county of Piura, on the north coast of Peru, just 120kms away from Ecuador. You will need to fly so let us organise your Domestic Flights there and back. Maybe do a Satelite Hospital experience also.

Lake Titicaca

Lake Titicaca , the cradle of the Incan civilization, and the origin of the Inca Empire is the largest lake on the South American continent and one of its highest (at about 3810 m/12,500 ft above sea level). The tour includes a visit to both Puno and Copacabana, and to the island of Amantani, the Uros Floating islands and the islands of Sun and Moon. This 5 day tour is a must. Afterwards, Either continue on to La Paz and the Salt Flats of Uyuni, or cross back into Peru and return to Cusco.
