INDIA MEDICAL ELECTIVES

Medical students will fly to Cochin and be taken to their hospital by our local representative. Placements will be in one of two hospitals, both in Kerala in South India; one at Cochin and another at Trichur. Kerala is a stunningly beautiful coastal area consisting of sandy white beaches, tropical backwaters and rainforest. Contact us for full details of these and other medical student electives.

Trichur: Placements at Trichur will be with a large missionary hospital run by Catholic monks and nuns and treating the very poorest people in Kerala. Students working here will be able to make a real difference to the lives of particularly needy people.

Cochin: Cochin has a large, modern hospital with excellent doctors. It will, nevertheless, provide an opportunity for students to experience medicine in a setting where the latest tests and treatments are not always available and so improvisation and clinical acumen become vital. The hospital is in the main town but the students will live on the nearby island of Fort Cochin in a large, colonial building. Seafood, such as lobster and tiger prawns, is plentiful and very cheap.

The Discovery Trip: The discovery trip will consist of a week participating in backwater village life, learning to about local food and customs and enjoying freshly harvested local produce. This will be followed by a week at our private beach house in a hidden and unspoiled location with four private beaches and a chef dishing up local cuisine. Finally, students can stay in a forest house in a national park where there is excellent trekking and the chance to see Indian elephants in their natural habitat.

Our electives can be taken for any period of time, but will usually cost £2000 to £2500 (GBP) dependant on cost of flights and time of year. This includes the flights, transfers, bed and breakfast, hospital attachment and the Discovery Trip. Students are strongly advised to take out travel insurance which we can advise on. Vaccination and visa advice will be provided.
